Irises have always been my favorite flower. Their exotic deep velvety purples and dynamically explosive shapes set them apart as uniquely different from other flowers. Half of the petals reach up towards the sky like hands in prayer, while the other half ruffle down like a debutante’s ballgown. Delicate trails of yellow fuzz lead your gaze into the mysterious white center, just hidden from view. These spotted iris eyes wink at you, but never completely reveal all their secrets.
This was one of the first oil paintings I’ve done, and that’s why it looks so different than the others. The highly textured technique was achieved by applying paint on thickly with a palette knife, to create added dimension.
